Etchings Etchings, working in America, Europe and Latin America. A Montgomery etching of Ole’ Joe, a clam digger, won the Silver Medal in the Paris Exposition of 1937, fifty years after another Maine artist, Winslow Homer, captured the same award in 1887. Etching subjects ranged from animals and people to boats, buildings and coastal scenes. Many of the Montgomery Christmas cards were often his etchings. Scroll Down Official website of the artist Claude Montgomery, a classic American portrait and plein air master, 1912 – 1990 Born in Portland, Maine in 1912, Claude Montgomery was an internationally acclaimed and awarded artist whose work included oils, watercolors and etchings. His Maine watercolors appeared on magazine covers and his portraits are hanging in State Houses and other places of honor. Influenced by John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer, Montgomery studied under Homer's protege, Alexander Bower and was awarded scholarships to study in New York and Rome. Friendship House In 1985, Claude and Louise used their life’s savings to open the Friendship House for men in Portland, Maine. After Claude’s death in 1990, Louise went on to open a second shelter, the Faith House for women and their children. The Friendship House still operates to this day. Support
